President Julius Maada Bio to attend TICAD7 Summit in Yokohama, Tokyo

Freetown, Sierra Leone, Sunday 25 August 2019 – His Excellency President Dr Julius Maada Bio will attend the Seventh Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD7) in Yokohama, Japan, following an invitation from Prime Minister Shinzō Abe.

This year’s TICAD7 Summit has been scheduled for 28 – 30 August and the theme for the summit is: “Advancing Africa’s development through people, technology and innovation”.

On the margins of the TICAD7 Summit, the President is also expected to address investors at the TICAD LUNCHEON on “Investing in Africa”. The event is designed to promote private investment from Japan to Africa by showcasing a successful Japanese agribusiness investment in Sierra Leone. Minister of Finance, Honourable Jacob Jusu Saffa, will also address the same event on: “The key factors needed to mobilise private investment in Sierra Leone”.

The Tokyo International Conference on African Development is a summit-level international conference focusing on development in Africa. It was created in 1993 by the Government of Japan to promote policy dialogue between leaders of African countries and development partners on pressing issues facing Africa such as economic development, poverty, and conflict.

Since its inception, TICAD has evolved into a significant global framework to facilitate the implementation of measures for promoting African development under the principles of African “ownership” and international “partnership”.  The Summit is co-organised by the Government of Japan, the United Nations, World Bank, United Nations Development Programme, and the African Union Commission.

His Excellency President Dr Julius Maada Bio will depart Lungi International Airport today, 25 August 2019 and will return to Sierra Leone on 1 September 2019. He will be accompanied by Her Excellency Madam Fatima Bio.
