Big 5 Game Change
Feed Salone
Transforming Agriculture for National Sovereignty, Economic Resilience, and Human Development
Feed Salone is the flagship national initiative under President Julius Maada Bio’s Medium-Term National Development Plan (MTNDP) 2024–2030. It is designed to transform Sierra Leone’s food systems from subsistence and dependency to a resilient, commercial, nutrition-sensitive, and technology-driven agricultural sector.
At its core, Feed Salone is a strategic shift from import reliance to self-sufficiency, with a mission to feed the nation from within—empowering farmers, revitalizing rural economies, and addressing food insecurity through systemic agricultural reform.
THE PRESIDENT'S VISION
Feed Salone is the centerpiece of the President’s 2030 agenda—a bold, people-focused response to systemic food challenges that links agricultural development to economic self-reliance, social equity, and national dignity.
By commercializing the agriculture sector, expanding value chains, and making farmers bankable, Feed Salone transforms farming from a survival mechanism into a modern economic engine.
Core Pillars Of Feed Salone
Feed Salone is built around three major policy result areas, each targeting a key transformation zone:
Accelerating Productivity and Sustainable Management of Fisheries and the Marine Sector
Sierra Leone’s coastal and inland waters hold vast untapped potential. This pillar aims to sustainably scale up fish production and create value-added blue economy jobs.
Key actions
- Regulate and expand aquaculture and inland fisheries.
- Upgrade cold chain logistics, landing sites, and processing facilities.
- Enforce policies against illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing.
- Train youth and women in sustainable fishing and marine management.
- Improve market linkages for export-quality fish products.
Outcome: A thriving fisheries sector that feeds local markets, exports high-value products, and preserves ecosystems.
Accelerating Agricultural Productivity and Commercialization
This pillar is about boosting production, modernizing methods, and making agriculture profitable for farmers.
Key actions
- Expand access to inputs (quality seeds, fertilizers, tools) through subsidy programs.
- Scale mechanization and irrigation across districts to improve land productivity.
- Build district-level storage, agro-processing, and aggregation centers.
- Create agricultural cooperatives and strengthen farmer-based organizations (FBOs).
- Support land reform and land access for women and youth.
Outcome: A highly productive, modern farming system where farmers earn, food is affordable, and production meets demand.
Ensuring Availability, Access, and Consumption of Safe, Nutritious Foods
Nutrition is the bridge between agriculture and human capital. This pillar addresses hunger, malnutrition, and food inequality, especially among children, pregnant women, and vulnerable communities.
Key actions
- Promote dietary diversity and bio-fortified crops.
- Expand school feeding programs using locally grown produce.
- Launch nutrition education campaigns at household and community levels.
- Build food distribution and logistics hubs in food-deficient districts.
- Integrate nutrition-sensitive targets into all agricultural projects.
Outcome: A population that is healthier, more productive, and more food secure.
