President Bio’s Strategic Priorities as ECOWAS Chair
Overview
On 22 June 2025, His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone assumed the Chairmanship of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government. This historic moment marks the first time a Sierra Leonean Head of State has held this prestigious regional position.
As Chairman, President Bio is committed to championing unity, peace, democratic governance, and sustainable development across West Africa. His leadership is guided by four bold and interconnected policy priorities:
Restoring Constitutional Order and Deepening Democracy
President Bio will lead ECOWAS efforts to:
- Uphold constitutional governance and democratic norms;
- Address unconstitutional changes of government;
- Support electoral integrity and peaceful political transitions across member states.
Revitalizing Regional Security Cooperation
In response to growing threats to peace and stability in the region, the President prioritizes:
- Strengthening joint security and intelligence cooperation;
- Supporting regional peacekeeping and counterterrorism efforts;
- Enhancing community-based resilience and conflict prevention.
Unlocking Economic Integration
To stimulate inclusive growth and regional trade, President Bio will:
- Promote the implementation of the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS);
- Advocate for infrastructure development and free movement of goods and people;
- Accelerate progress toward a regional monetary union and common market.
Building Institutional Credibility
President Bio emphasizes strong and effective institutions to:
- Enhance ECOWAS's responsiveness and accountability;
- Foster transparent governance within member states;
- Deepen citizen trust in regional processes and decision-making.
