President Bio Arrives in Nouakchott ahead of the AU Summit

Nouakchott, Mauritania, Friday 29th June 2018 – The Chairperson of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union and Coordinator of the African Union Committee of Ten on UN Security Council Reform, His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone has arrived today in Nouakchott ahead of the 31st Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly slated for 30th June – 2nd July 2018.

His Excellency President Bio was received by his counterpart, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania at the Oumtounsy International Airport, Nouakchott. After the arrival, President Bio and his colleague, President Aziz held a closed-door meeting where they would have renewed the bilateral ties between Sierra Leone and Mauritania.

This African Union Summit is President Bio’s first AU Summit as President of the Republic of Sierra Leone. Despite attending his maiden AU Summit, his international reputation has been strengthened by being conferred two important responsibilities as Chairperson of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union and Coordinator of the African Union Committee of Ten on UN Security Council Reform.

President Bio has given a new face to Sierra Leone’s international reputation as many Heads of State and Government see him as young, charismatic, inspiring and economically prudent. His Excellency President Bio was also received by the substantive Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Dr Alie Kabba and the Minister of Finance, Jacob Jusu Saffa, both of whom have been part of an advanced delegation to Nouakchott in preparation for the AU Summit.

The African Union Summit starts on Saturday 30th June 2018 and His Excellency President Bio will deliver five key speeches on range of issues while he will be chairing two important meetings of Heads of State and Government. President Bio has been accompanied by his wife, Mrs Fatima Bio.
